Prevent is a government led safeguarding strategy which aims to provide training and guidance to all care providers, including those in the education sector. In July 2015, all school and childcare providers became bound by duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act. The Prevent duty requires all education providers ‘to help prevent the risk of people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism’. This includes safeguarding learners from extremist ideologies and radicalisation.
The Prevent strategy has three main objectives. These are to:
1. Challenge the ideology that supports terrorism and those who promote it.
2. Protect vulnerable people.
3. Support sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation.
